The leader of Opposition in Parliament Joel Ssenyonyi has accused the government of continued ban on Facebook by the government which he says was meant to gag Ugandans from expressing themselves against the leaders.

Ssenyonyi also called on fellow leaders to accept criticism as a way of being held accountable.

Joel Ssenyonyi was speaking about perspectives of youth participation in shaping Uganda’s democratic landscape during the opening of the second National Youth Symposium organised by the Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy in Kampala on February 21, 2024.

“The Head of State got annoyed and banned Facebook for now four years because it was being used to criticise him. If you cannot stand the heat, get out of the kitchen, If you don’t want to be criticised as a leader, then you’re not ready for leadership,” said Joel Ssenyonyi.

Facebook was banned during 2020/21 elections and todate it has never been allowed although Ugandans access it using VPN.
