In a surprising turn of events, Uganda’s First Son, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has announced his decision to withdraw from the 2026 Presidential race, endorsing his father, President Yoweri Museveni, for another term in office. Muhoozi issued a statement in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, which has left his supporters in shock.
“I would like to announce that I will not be on the ballot paper in 2026. Almighty God told me to focus on His army first. So, I fully endorse President Yoweri Museveni in the next elections,” Gen. Muhoozi declared.
The announcement comes as a surprise to many, given Gen. Muhoozi’s increasing political profile and earlier mobilisation efforts by his supporters.
In a controversial addition to his statement, Muhoozi declared that after President Museveni, no civilian would lead Uganda, implying that the country’s leadership must remain within the security forces. “No civilian will lead Uganda after President Museveni. The security forces will not allow it. The next leader will be a soldier or policeman,” he stated, suggesting a strong military influence in Uganda’s future leadership.
Muhoozi also expressed deep pride in his role within the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF). “For me, nothing on this earth is more Holy than UPDF! So, I cannot think of a greater honour than being in UPDF. It is Holy Ground!! God bless Holy UPDF and Sacred Uganda forever!!!” he added in an impassioned message.
This announcement is likely to further stir Uganda’s political landscape as the 2026 elections approach, with debates over the succession of President Museveni—one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders—continuing to intensify.
