Former Vice President of Uganda Prof Gilbert Balibaseka Bukenya has been appointed as a Presidential Advisor on Environment and sanitation. The announcement has been made by the President through the Presidential Press Unit.

Gilbert Bukenya who also served as Busiro North legislator (1996 -2016) was the Vice President of Uganda between 2003 to 2011 before being sacked after allegations that he was harboring Presidential ambitions. He had previously served as a minister for the Presidency.

After Bukenya’s sacking in 2011, he was taken to court for his involvement in the 2007 CHOGM scandal in which he chaired the Cabinet Sub Committee that organised the Common Wealth Heads of Government meeting that was held in Kampala in 2007, however the case was dropped. He also lost his 2016 bid to retain a Busiro North Parliamentary seat and again lost in 2021 elections.

In 2016 he was among a loose coalition of opposition politicians called The Democratic Alliance (TDA) but backed off when the coalition failed. Of late Bukenya has been seen attending NRM function a sign that he was about to be rehabilitated.

As a Presidential Advisor, Bukenya joins his successor Edward Ssekandi and his predecessor Dr Specioza Wandira Kazibwe who both serve as senior Presidential Advisors.
