The Deputy Speaker of Parliament the Rt Hon Thomas Tayebwa has called on the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives to ensure that the Consumer Protection Bill is also brought to Parliament for enactment, in order to ensure that Ugandans are protected from consuming harmful substandard goods.
This communication was made in the Plenary sitting of Parliamentary that was held on Tuesday 6th Feb 2024.
“We really hope that these roles play a critical role in facilitating the smooth running of Government, especially the Competition. Minister, remember you promised us on the Consumer Protection law which we said we needed it separate from the Competition Act, and I hope we shall use it effectively. We need the Consumer Protection Act, we don’t want it to come as a private member’s bill, but members will move if you don’t fulfill what you promised us,” said Thomas Tayebwa
Tayebwa’s comments come at a time when Ugandans are complaining about several sub-standard goods on the market which have affected the economy in many ways.
Consumer protection bill if tabled will put stringent measures to ensure that such goods that don’t meet a minimum standards do not enter the country and whenever they enter then the perpetrators are heavily punished!
