The Auditor General, John Muwanga, has revealed in the December 2023 annual audit report that out of the 34,000 cancer cases recorded at the Uganda Cancer Institute in 2023, the Institute only treated 5,071 patients.

The report further notes the Institute lacks data on the number of patients that sought treatment from other health facilities.

Details are contained in the Value for Money Audit Report on the Provision of Super Specialised Oncology Services by Uganda Cancer Institute (UCI).

The report noted, “UCI only treated 5,071 (14%) of the 34,000 new cancer cases in 2023. The institute lacked data on patients receiving treatment at other public and private centres.”

The Auditor General also decried the meagre funds allocated to the Institute.

The past six 6 financial years 2017/2018 to 2022/23, Government has only released Sh407.98b for the operations of the Uganda Cancer Institute.
