This morning the Deputy Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon Thomas Tayebwa has welcomed a Chinese delegation led by the deputy chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress of China, Mr Luosang Jiangcun at Parliament.
The visit is meant to discuss Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit preparations in the country. Uganda will host the 8-day summit in January 2024.
NAM was founded in 1961 with the aim of advancing interests of developing countries in the context of Cold War confrontation.
The Movement played a key role in the decolonization, formation of new independent states, and democratization of international relations.
Currently, the main objectives of NAM include among others, encourage friendly relations amongst member States, advocate peaceful settlement of international disputes, protect fundamental human rights and environment, and avert the use of force and use of nuclear weapons.
With at least 120 members, NAM is only second to the United Nations (UN) as the largest grouping of States worldwide.
