The Minister for Agriculture, Hon Frank Tumwebaze, has defended the latest total quarantine that was imposed some districts, attributing the decision on the short lifespan of the Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) vaccines.

Tumwebaze explained to Parliament that the nature of the vaccines made it inevitable for the Commissioner Animal Health who is the Commander of the animal disease control chain in the Country to order/impose animal movement restrictions.

He added that the total quarantine in affected districts is aimed at controlling the spread of the virus.

The Minister added that Uganda needs $176m (around Sh671.869b) every year to buy 88 million doses of FMD vaccines if the country is to ably fight the virus; only 2.3 million doses have been ordered and are yet to arrive in the country!
