The National Resistance Movement Party chairman and also the President of Uganda has launched the party’s national wide voter registration exercise ahead of the 2026 general elections.

The function was held at the NRM headquarters at Kyadondo road in Kampala on Wednesday 28th Feb 2024.

The event was attended by the NRM Central Executive Committee members led by Al Hajj Moses Kigongo, Rt Hon Rabbeca Kadaga, Caor Mike Mukula, Dr Chris Baryomunsi among others.

The NRM headquarters of Electoral Commission Dr Tanga Odoi said that the NRM registration exercise will kick off on wednesday 13th-Sunday to 17th March 2024. He also said that the process will include update of NRM register in all the 7200 villages of Uganda.

“On Sunday 17th March in the afternoon, all villages will have a village baraza where the names of the members registered will be read to the community for them to approve” Tanga Odoi said.

At the event, the NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong said that NRM has a total of 11.4 million voters in their active register but said that some of the voters have names but the majority do not have National Identification Numbers.

“These voters have names but the majority do not have National Identification Numbers. This exercise is to make sure that we organize this register and put the names accordingly” said Richard Todwong.

The President of Uganda Kaguta Museveni challenged NRM leaders at the event to understand the NRM ideology.

“As you mobilize first of all understand the NRM principles yourselves, that is why you as leaders have to be different from the followers. The follower doesn’t have to understand the depth of the matter” said Museveni.

Apparently the NRM party supporters are divided between supporting the recently launched Patriotic League of Uganda under Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba and NRM under Gen Museveni in the 2026 elections. The launch of the new registration process still doesn’t answer the confusion and it is not clear whether Muhoozi supporters will register for NRM or not!
