NAM Chairmanship passed onto Uganda from Azerbaijan, Israel conflict discussed

Azerbaijan has passed on the Chairmanship for the Non-Aligned Movement to Uganda today during the Ministerial meeting which was officially opened by the Vice President, HE Jessica Alupo.

Alupo thanked Azerbaijan for the great leadership and said that Uganda will build on it to strengthen the 120-member State organization stronger.

She said that the organization will not deviate from the founders’ vision of a the vital role of deepened cooperation which is key for global prosperity.

“Through founders’ vision, colonialism has nearly ended. As global south nations, we regularly discuss common concerns. This meeting is another chance for constructive dialogue,” said Alupo.

Alupo said that the ongoing geopolitical tensions around the global are a huge challenge to the movement.

“Ongoing geopolitical tensions, like the conflicts in Ukraine, Russia, Israel, and Palestine, are concerning. They challenge our Movement’s core principles, causing loss of lives, property destruction, and exacerbating humanitarian crises,” she asserted.

Meanwhile, South Africa’s Minister for International Relations, Naledi Mandisa Pandor, did not mince her words on the ongoing war between Israel and the Hamas in Palestine.

“We cannot ignore or neglect the plight of the people of Palestine; Human Rights shouldn’t be used as a mere instrument of foreign policy by the most powerful states” said Mandisa assertively.

Recently, South Africa dragged Israel to the International Court of Justice over war crimes in Palestine.
