Opposition MPs pin Government over loans

Opposition Members of Parliament (MPs) have called on Government for discrepancies in figures on Uganda’s public debt portfolio.

The MPs believe that the National Resistence Movement (NRM) is now just borrowing for fun, which allegedly explains why loans worth Sh14.5tn remain unutilized and yet the money is attracting interest.

The Opposition expressed their concerns in their minority report to the 2024/25 budget framework paper.

The report was signed by Hon Ssemujju Nganda (Kira Municipality), Hon Yusuf Nsibambi (Mawokota South), Hon Muwada Nkunyingi (Kyadondo East) and Hon Evans Kanyinke (Bokoto Central).

The Minority report further questioned the glaring difference in budget allocations to State House in comparison to public hospitals in Uganda, wondering why the Presidency has 666 vehicles yet there are only 178 ambulances in public health facilities!

“There are people in this Parliament who claim to love President Museveni more than Dr.Kizza Besigye who treated him when they were fighting in Luwero. Even if you are one of them, you cannot justify the President keeping 266 vehicles at his residence (State House)  and 400 vehicles under his office yet the total number of ambulances in Public facilities is 178. The convoy alone if 69 vehicles,” noted Ssemujju.
