Opposition return to Parliament as gov’t tables report!

The Opposition Members of Parliament have returned to the plenary after a one month strike that saw them boycott the house following failure of government to respond to their  concerning regarding the 18 missing persons. The statement that has been a point of contention was produced by the Minister of State for Internal Affairs Gen David Muhoozi ina plenary sitting that sat on 29th November 2023.

In the statement by David Muhozi, the government denied an allegation levelled by Opposition that Uganda is among the worst human rights abusers saying that it was a sweeping statement that was unsubstantiated, saying that “it is a government policy and conviction to respect human rights” David Muhozi said. He also said that contrary to the claims by the opposition , a report on the November 2020 riots was presented to Parliament by then Minister of Internal Affairs. The statement also mentioned security officers who charged and sentenced over the deaths in the November riots, the civilians who were charged in Courts and those who were cleared of any charges.

Members of Parliament have not discuss the said statement as the Leader of Opposition Hon athias Mpuuga requested for time to present a rejoinder on Tuesday next week and then the house shall  debate both the report and the rejoinder and take a decision. However in his communication to the house, Hon Mpuuga wondered how a 17 page report could have taken 40 days to make wondering how many paragraphs were being written on each day.

The Speaker the Rt Hon Anita Among allowed Mpuuga space to read and internalize the report and therefore prepare his rejoinder. The Speaker also thanked Mpuuga for the civility exercised as he summited on the said matter. This site will bring you the details of the government report on the 18 missing people.
