The Deputy Speaker of Parliament Rt Hon Thomas Tayebwa has led Parliament in paying tribute to the former President of Namibia, Hage Geingob, who died on Sunday while receiving medical treatment in the nation’s capital, Windhoek. Tayebwa said that Namibia is a close friend to Uganda, citing the help the country extended to Uganda during the liberation struggle to obtain independence in 1962.
However the Opposition Chief Whip, John Baptist Nambeshe while reacting to Deputy Speaker’s tribute to former Namibia President, urged fellow lawmakers to pick lessons from the fact that Hage Geingob, passed on while seeking treatment from his nation’s hospital, instead of flying abroad as has become common in Uganda.
He added, “But year in, year out, the budgetary allocations have always been skewed in favour of three lion shares of; security, defence and sometimes on infrastructure development. But for once, we would get to know that life should be put first. We would rather have our health services improved than having our own die in neighbouring countries.” John Baptist Nambeshe said
Members of Parliament and other Ugandans have always blamed the government for failure to fund health care with many government officials dying from foreign hospitals with the latest being former Dokolo legislator Cecilia Ogwal.
