The Parliament will today hold a special sitting to pay tribute to former Minister and MP Joyce Rovincer Mpanga.
The gallant leader, teacher and politician passed away on Saturday at 89 years.
Mpanga served as Minister for Women in Development between 1988 and 1989 where she greatly contributed to emancipation and empowerment of women.
In 1989 she was appointed Minister of State in charge of Primary Education and served until 1992.
In the first general Presidential and parliamentary elections under President Museveni, Mpanga contested and was elected MP for Mubende District, she served for one term from 1996 until 2001.
Prior to that, Mpanga taught at Makerere College in 1958 before becoming the headmistress of Gayaza High School in 1962 and was elected onto the Uganda Legislative Council in 1960.
When Obote’s army attacked the Lubiri, Mpanga who was active in Buganda government works, fled into exile to England in 1966 and only returned in 1972, after Gen Amin had taken over power in 1971.
Mpanga has been a member of the Lukiiko since 2009 until her death.
She attended Gayaza High School, Makerere College, University of London where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts before joining Indiana University Bloomington in the US for her Masters.
Mpanga is survived with two children, Owekitiibwa David Mpanga is the most known due to his affiliation in the legal issues with Buganda Kingdom.
Mpanga’s grandson, George Mpanga better known as George the Poet, is a popular poet, rapper and podcast host in England.
Top government officials, religious, political and cultural leaders across the country are expected in the Parliament to pay their tribute to the fallen heroic leader.
