The National represents for People Living With Disabilities Laura Kanushu expressed disappointment over the failure by Gov’t to provide enough funds & specialist teachers to schools with children with disabilities, warning that if these issues aren’t addressed, Uganda will raise a generation that will be a burden to the country, yet if these learners with special needs obtained an education, they would become independent and provide for themselves.
Kanushu made the remarks during Parliamentary plenary seating on Tuesday as MPs discussed the opening of the academic year 2024. Kanushu expressed her disappointment for failure by the government to table a report regarding the performance of the PWDs as was directed by Parliament which according to her jeopardize their learning.
“When you give directives in this Parliament, is it for show, it is a year ago, other results have come, students are failing, we are raising a generation that will be a burden in this nation. In the recently released PLE results, schools of children with disabilities have failed again miserably. I didn’t see that report which you asked the Ministry to bring here and it still goes back to the issue of funding. 99% schools of children with disabilities are government aided, there are specialist teachers, there are no materials that speak to the needs of these learners,” added Kanushu.
Kanushu also asked Deputy Speaker, Thomas Tayebwa to clarify on the essence of the parliamentary directives issued to government, citing the failure by the Ministry of Education to provide a report on the performance of schools with children with disabilities.
