A group of Opposition MPs have asked Gov’t to expedite the process of rescuing Ugandans they claim were captured in Myanmar, with fears that some of the captives might be forced into rebel activities if they aren’t rescued on time.

The call was made by the Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs Muwada Nkunyingyi who was also franked by Hon Kayemba Solo both of the National Unity Platform.

“We can’t celebrate that Uganda hosts so many international summits, built a beautiful hotel when Ugandans who must benefit squarely from the foreign relations are suffering from foreign countries,” said Nkunyingi.

Muwada also asked Gov’t to address the complaints of detention and persecution of Ugandans trapped in the Middle East, noting that despite the numerous reports of inhumane treatment, sexual violence raised by Ugandans working abroad, there is no clear response that has been put in place to respond to these concerns.

The Myanmar civil war, also called the Myanmar Spring Revolution and the People’s Defensive War, is an ongoing civil war following Myanmar’s long-running insurgencies, which escalated significantly in response to the 2021 military coup d’état and the subsequent violent crackdown on anti-coup protests.

Myanmar is a country situated in Southeast Asia and is bordered on the north and north-east by China, on the east and south-east by Laos and Thailand, on the south by the Andaman Sea and the Bay of Bengal and on the west by Bangladesh and India.
