Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, has supported Husnah Kukundakwe, Uganda’s only classified Paralympic swimmer, with two return air tickets to train at the Paralympic Games in Canada.

The training scheduled for December is aimed at ushering the swimmer to the 2024 International Paralympic Games in Paris, France.

Kukundakwe, 14, won two gold medals at the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo.

At the send off event, Speaker Among, was represented by Hon. Laura Kanushu (NRM, PWDs). She recognized Kukundakwe’s talent as having the potential to inspire many children to develop their talents.

“I want to applaud you for the crucial role you are playing in encouraging other children to believe in themselves and work hard to achieve their potential; you are a true embodiment of resilience, hard work, and faith in oneself,” said Kanushu.

The swimmer will travel with her mother, Hashma Batamuriza, who doubles as her manager.

Kanushu said Kukundakwe’s example in disregarding her disability, goes a long way in helping people with disabilities to defy stereotypes and pursue their dreams.

She further applauded Kukundakwe, for promoting the country’s image owing to her age, disability, and the number of medals won in just one game.

“Winning six medals at the world solidarity games in Konya, Turkey, is a sign that are destined for greatness. I want to thank you for bringing home two gold medals, three silvers, and one bronze all by yourself. You are doing your part in promoting the image of our country,” said Kanushu.

She recognized the 11th Parliament’s commitment in promoting sports, citing the increasing budgetary allocations and the successful bid to co-host the 2027 African Cup of Nations.

Kukundakwe appreciated Among’s gesture, saying she had lost hope of participating in the Canadian games.

“Honestly, to me, this was a will it happens, will it not happen kind of event. I have been training for the past months and I am glad for the opportunity to train more so as to qualify for the Paris Paralympic Games,” said Kukundakwe.
