The Deputy Speaker of Parliament, the Rt Hon Thomas Tayebwa has directed the Minister of Agriculture to present a statement regarding the quarantine that has been imposed on 32 districts stopping livestock from moving which is affecting livestock farmers.
The Deputy Speaker issued the directive during a Plenary session on Thursday 25th Jan 2024.
“I have received very many calls concerning the issue of Foot and Mouth Disease quarantine enforced in 32 districts across the country. Farmers whose livelihoods depend on these animals want to know when this quarantine ends. We need to know how we got here and the ministry’s long-term plan, to manage and reduce the economic effects of the Foot and Mouth disease problem” Thomas Tayebwa during plenary!
“I have instructed the Agriculture minister to make a statement in parliament on Thursday next week, explaining how long the affected districts have to be under quarantine and what the government is doing to resolve the problem especially in regards to giving farmers the necessary vaccines” said Tayebwa.
Foot and mouth disease has remained a huge challenge to livestock farmers with most vaccines & livestock drugs failing to address the disease. Uganda’s milk has also faced rejection in our neighboring countries like Kenya over foot and mouth disease!
