Katonga bridge that was damaged in May this year by heavy rains has been under construction since by the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) and the work is near completion as vehicles can cross the said bridge.

Katonga bridge is very significant as it connects greater Masaka, Ankole and Kigezi to Kampala. It is also a gate way of goods and services to and from countries like Rwanda, Tanzania and Democratic Republic of Congo through several boarder points of Kikagati and Mutukula connecting to Tanzania, Gatuna and Kagitumba connecting to Rwanda, Bunaganana and Ishasha connecting to the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The legislators are on their two weeks monitoring exercise where they are assessing the implementation of government projects and the budget for the financial year 2022/23. The MPs also assessed the ongoing works at Mpigi express high way that is also under construction. The legislators were welcomed by the Executive Director Uganda National Roads Authority Allen Kagina and UNRA team who briefed the team on the progress of the ongoing works

Oversight is one of the core mandates of Parliament and the eleventh Parliament has emphasized monitoring of government programs. In 2021 MPs were dispatched to various parts of the country to monitor health service delivery and emyoga program. The MPs also went to monitor and assess Parish Development Model and made a report which was appreciated by the President and many Ugandans. The findings of MPs monitoring exercises help to improve and redesign government programs for effective service delivery in the country.
