Three Members of Parliament, a city lawyer, and a principal cooperatives officer have been remanded back to Luzira prison until July 18th, 2024, after their bail applications were adjourned to allow prosecution to verify their bail documents.

Mawanda Michael Maranga, Wamakuyu Ignatius Mudimi, Akamba Paul, Kirya Julius, and Kavundira Leonard are facing charges of diversion of public resources and conspiracy to defraud the government of 3.4 billion shillings.

The accused persons presented their bail applications through their lawyers, but prosecution requested more time to verify the documents, leading to the adjournment.

The accused have already spent 18 days on remand since their first appearance in court on June 21st.

Investigations into the matter are complete, and it is alleged that the five accused shared 3.4 billion shillings meant for war loss compensation by the government to Buyaka Growers Cooperatives Society Ltd.

Additionally, each of the MPs is alleged to have individually converted millions of shillings for their own benefit, depriving the cooperatives society of compensation totaling 9.3 billion shillings.

The accused have denied the charges.
