Ugandan Parliament reflects unity in diversity – Anita Among!

The Speaker of Parliament of Uganda has said that the composition of Ugandan Parliament has championed national unity and cohesion.

While giving her welcome remarks at the 27th Common Wealth Speakers and Presiding Officers Conference in Kampala today, Among explained to guests for composition of Ugandan Parliament as an inclusive one with all categories and people represented a basis upon which national unity has been constructed.

“Parliament of Uganda is a unicameral multi-party Parliament, established by Article 77 of our National Constitution. It comprises 529 directly elected Members and 28 Ex-Officio Members of which 34% (189 Members) are female.  Besides the directly elected constituency representatives, the composition of the Parliament of Uganda also includes; Women, Youth, Persons with Disability, Workers, the elderly and the national army-the Uganda Peoples Defence Forces” Among said.

She added, ” this speaks to the inherent diversity that characterises the Ugandan Parliament. For a nation of 46.2 million people spread across 65 indigenous communities as listed in the Third Schedule of our National Constitution, various religious groups, diverse ethnic nationalities and various interest groups, the recognition of and respect for this diversity is the beginning of cohesion and national unity” and he thanked the President, His Excellency Gen. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for his relentless commitment to the realization of a just and fair society that works for all people irrespective of age, creed, religion, gender and race.
