UPDF wazalendo SACCO donates to Women in Katakwi

The International Women’s Day celebrations in Katakwi district received a generous donation from Wazalendo Savings and Credit Cooperative Society (WSACCO). Valued at shs10 million, the donation consisted of 518 packs of reusable sanitary pads and 139 standard maama kits.

Major (Rtd) Godfrey Katamba, the Katakwi Resident District Commissioner, praised WSACCO for its commitment to both its members and the wider community. Colonel Betty Musuya, Director of Women Affairs for the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces, commended WSACCO for its swift response in supporting girls and women during the Women’s Day celebrations.

This donation, in accordance with cooperative principle number seven, aims to support vulnerable girls and women in Katakwi. Maj Ongodia, representing the Eastern Region on the WSACCO Board of Directors, emphasized the cooperative’s dedication to serving not only soldiers but also the broader community.

Maj Mariam Kagoro, the gender representative on the Board of Directors, expressed gratitude to the board and management for their support of female residents in Katakwi. Dr. Simon Omeke, the District Health Officer, acknowledged the donation’s significance in addressing menstrual hygiene management issues among girls, which often lead to school dropouts and early marriages.

The donated sanitary pads have been distributed to school-going girls and teenagers identified by local leaders, while the maama kits will support expectant mothers in need.
