We need your wise counsel, Speaker Among tells her predecessors

The Speaker of Parliament has asked her predecessors to always provide their wise counsel in ensuring the country moves forward.

Speaking after handing over four brand new SUVs to her predecessors who included Hon Al Haji Moses Kigongo, Professor Edward Rugumayo, Rt Hon Edward Ssekandi and the representative of Rt Hon Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga.

“I want to inform you that as our elders, we need your wise counsel from time to time in running the affairs of our Parliament and Country. I will soon communicate a formal frame work through which the House will tap into your wisdom and experiences.  We pledge to leave this Parliament a better place for the next generation of leaders,” Among told her predecessors.

She called upon them to always guide her team to ensure continuity of visionary leadership.

“We strongly believe that our leaders should be recognized and celebrated in their lifetime, contrary to the tradition of saying so many nice things about them when they are no more,” asserted Among soon after handing over the brand new SUVs to her predecessors.

She wished them a happy holiday and best of luck in their retirement.

The Speaker said that Parliament will continuously engage her predecessors on matters of national importance to tap into their wealth of experience and knowledge.

“You will henceforth always be invited and recognized at all Parliamentary Ceremonies,” noted the Speaker.

Among revealed that Parliament extends full pension benefits to all the families of Speakers who died in retirement or in office.

They include the late Rt. Hon. Alexander Waibale, Chairman of the National Consultative Council, the late Rt. Hon. Francis Ayume, Speaker of the Sixth Parliament, the late Rt. Hon. James Wapakhabulo, Speaker of the Sixth Parliament, the late Rt. Hon. Betty Okwir, Deputy Speaker of the Sixth Parliament, and the late Rt. Hon. Jacob Oulanyah, Deputy Speaker of the 9th and 10th Parliament and Speaker of the 11th Parliament.
