Ten Women Representatives of newly created Cities in Parliament and 12 Municipality MPs risk losing their seats following a Constitutional petition challenging their seats in the August House.
In a petition filed by Alliance for Finance Monitoring and Walezi wa Katiba Foundation, and Magelah Peter Gwayaka the 22 MPs are described as those that impose a burden on the tax- payers money because municipalities are Administrative units under Local Governments which are not supposed to have represantives in the house.
The petitioners further contend that A 78 (1) of the Constitution provides for seats of District Women Representatives and not City Women MPs as a special group.
They are now seeking Court to orders the City Woman Representatives vacate their offices with immediate effect as the seat is non-existent.
They also want Court to issue an order that the said Members of Parliament representing Municipalities vacate their seats as they offend the constitution.
Some of the MPs who will be affected once this petition succeeds include the Arua, Mbale, Mbarara, Soroti, Fort portal, Jinja , Gulu and Hoima City woman MPs and those who have constituencies within the these newly created cities.
