Katonga bridge which has been under renovation is set to be officially opened on Friday 15th Dec 2023. This was declared by the Minister for Works and Transport Gen Edward Katumba Wamala while addressing Parliament on Wednesday 13th Dec 2023. Katumba Wamala was responding to a comment by Bukimbiri County MP Eddy Kwizera who said that people from western Uganda were facing a problem as they had to go through Sembabule which is costly. Kwizera also raised a concern of Kisoro air stip which is in a sorry state with potholes and stones making it difficult for aircrafts to land.
Katonga bridge was destroyed in May 2023 due to heavy rains and since then heavy vehicles have been unable to cross as the UNRA team was still repairing the bridge. The same issue was raised by Nathan Byanyima the Bukanga MP.
