Mpuuga condemns violence by UPDF on lakes

The Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Hon Mathias Mpuuga has condemned the violence that has always been exhibited on the fishermen on the lakes. Mpuuga was speaking at the Midterm review meeting for the opposition leadership in Parliament in which he gave accountability for the two and a half years that he has been in Parliament.

Mpuuga said that his leadership visited several fishing grounds during his tenure and cases of violence and human rights violations by the UPDF were reported by the public. Mpuuga said that the issues were tabled before Parliament and debated, “every place we have gone to in fishing communities, they have complained about abuse, people have been killed, property destroyed by men and women in uniform” Mpuuga said.

He said that he had talked with the Speaker of Parliament Rt Hon Anita Among and she was going to issue terms of reference for the Committee on Human Rights to investigate Human Rights violations that has been taking place at our lakesMpuuga said that his team had done enough in checking government excesses and he was proud of the work done during his tenure, “am proud we are not an armchair opposition, we have gone to the people, spoken to them and better understood their tribulations”, Mpuuga said.

Mpuuga’s replacement is expected to be announced during this festive season in case he is to be dropped!
