Education Minister releases 2023 PLE exams

The Minister for Education and the First Lady, Hon Janet Kataha Museveni, has released the PLE exams for 2023 at State House, Nakasero.

According to the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) Executive Director, Dan Odongo, a total of 749,254 candidates from 15,859 centres (schools) registered for PLE in 2023 compared to 832,654 in 2022.

501,602 (66.9%) from 11,365 centres were Universal Primary Education (UPE) beneficiaries, and 247,652 (33.1) of the candidates were Non UPE.

“Whereas I recognize the great strides being made in bringing about gender parity in access to primary education for boys and girls, I observed a concerning trend regarding the boy child,” said Museveni.

The females performance is better than the males in English, where 90.64% passed English compared to the boys who are 88.32%.

Odongo said there districts such as Kibuku were 31.5% are ungraded, Madi-Okollo at 28.9%, Kween 28.4%, among others and noted that it is necessary to find out the causes and address them.

According to the report, a higher proportion of the 2023 candidates passed in Division 3 and above level. Overall, the performance of candidates is comparable to that of 2022 according to Odongo.

Odongo said that 69 candidates were registered at the Uganda Government Upper Prison School in Luzira Examination Centre compared to 68 who were registered in 2022.

He added that in Science and Mathematics, the overall performance indicates that more of the candidates passed proportionally those two subjects.

Odongo said that Parents, Candidates and other interested parties may use the SMS Feature to get the results of the candidates on their phones.

The selection of senior one students will start on 1st and 2nd or February.  The new term for senior one will begin on the 19th of February.
