The remarkable visit of Patriotic League of Uganda ‘s Chairperson General Muhoozi Kainerugaba to Masaka has shocked the opposition’s National Unity Platform political party members, eye witness has learnt.
Muhoozi on Friday held a successful Baraza at the Liberation Square where thousands of people gathered to listen to his message regarding what the Patriotic League of Uganda does and why they formed it.
However, Muhoozi who arrived in a Uganda People’s Defence Forces -UPDF Chopper with his wife Charlotte Kainerugaba at Lord’s Grace Primary School in Nabyewanga Mpigi District was welcomed by large numbers of people along the Masaka route as he proceeded to the venue, a difference of about 95km . He made stop overs along the way on almost every trading center as he greeted and chatted with his supporters most of whom had blocked the road demanding him to get out of his vehicle forcefully to attend to them. The supporters shouted slogans to mean that they love and support Muhoozi and come what he is their next President. Business and traffic flow was at this moment on standstill, and some learners from schools nearby the roadside also posed along the roads to show solidarity for the first son.
Since 2021 elections when President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni was defeated in the Central region by National Unity Platform’s Robert Kyagulanyi, NUP has been bragging of having the political command in the Central Region.
However, the visit of Muhoozi has given a big blow to them and they are considering going back to the drawing board to clean their house, according to sources.
Highly placed sources in NUP who have refused to be quoted as they are not authorized to speak on behalf of the Party have told Our Reporter that “We didn’t see this coming. We actually thought it’s business as usual but we have been caught off guard. Anyway, you know the current situation in our party, we are divided ever since the Hon Mpuuga issue of the Service Award”, said the source.
Adding that “, right now everyone is minding their businesses and God for us all. That’s why you see Muhoozi has pulled off those crowds. Most of them are our supporters. We have nothing to do”.
NUP recently suspended the former Leader of Opposition Mathias Mpuuga from his job as a Commissioner of Parliament , an issue that was welcomed by mixed reactions and actions in Masaka , most of which leading to break-ups.
While at the rally, Muhoozi ,the former Commander of -UPDF Land Forces addressed the masses about three issues namely; the Patriotic League of Uganda , it’s youth agenda and wealth creation.
He explained that PLU is a civic organization that is seeking to sensitize people to love their country , to be good citizens , to have a spirit of national service, to protect Uganda from international interference and to support the vulnerable people, and to fight the corruption vice.
“As Patriotic League of Uganda-PLU, we believe Uganda cannot develop without these values. Patriotism empowers the citizens to achieve development. PLU is non partisan . It is non-denominational, and it is not sectarian. We have people from every tribe , every race, religion and we have people from many political parties even Honorable Kagabo is here”, said Muhoozi .
He added that “we don’t care about political parties. All we want to know is are you ready to sacrifice for your country. As earlier said , as Patriotic League , we are aiming at fighting corruption and abuse of office, because these evils hinder development of the country”.
According to Muhoozi, corruption and abuse of office are the biggest problems in this country.
“A public office means it belongs to everyone in this country. Any body holding a public office is there because of you as the tax payer. Therefore ,do not elect corrupt people and those who will support foreign interests”, said Muhoozi.
He challenged voters to always elect people who will help the country to develop working together with President Museveni, but not those who will give him(Museveni )headache.
Regarding Wealth Creation , Muhoozi first appreciated the people of Masaka , Kalungu and Kyotera districts for growing coffee and encouraged people who have land to also emulate those who are growing the plant.
He appreciated President Museveni for organizing farmers from nine villages along Kisozi farm majority of whom are from Sembabule. Muhoozi said that Museveni helped the farmers to develop and they are now big commercial farmers.
He cited examples such as Reverend David Mugenyi who gets 101 million shillings from coffee per year and James Karanda another farmer who received mango from Presidential initiative and now earns 46 million shillings per year . This, he said is sufficient evidence that farming is a good way to get people out of poverty if it is done well.
Muhoozi also revealed that government will soon deliver 10 million vaccines to vaccinate animals from Foot and Mouth Disease which has since caused quarantine of animals in most parts of the country.
Regarding the issues affecting those at Lake shores , the General decried that some of those issues are as a result of government policies to eradicate bad fishing activities at the lake.
He then tasked the Agriculture Minister Frank Tumwebaze to speak about the problems at the lake. In response, Tumwebaze said that Museveni has deployed soldiers at the lake shores to identify the problem and come up with a complete solution.
Further, Muhoozi pledged to support small business groups and talent development such as the sports men and women emphasizing that such promote discipline in both character, leadership , social cohesion, develop brotherhood promotion and unity.
He noted that government has since released six billion shillings to remodel Masaka Recreational Grounds emphasizing that all sports will be there including basketball for which he called upon the people to embrace.
To the young people in other businesses such as mechanics, jua Kali , he said they will be given capital to boost them just like those in Kampala and further pledged to support women empowerment programs.
The first son further decried delayed compensation of the land owners of the Sango Bay Palm Oil project and tasked the Kyotera District RDC and Minister Tumwebaze to make sure the issue is resolved.
He concluded by appreciating the people who have attended the Baraza and those who have given him gifts saying that he owes them a lot.
On his part, the Vice Chairperson for PLU Central Region Frank Gashumba appealed to Muhoozi to fight corruption when he takes over leadership of this country and also to fix social services such as hospital and schools which he said are in sorry state with some areas having none nearby.
PLU’s Vice Chairperson for Western region Dr Balaam Barugahara Ateenyi unveiled to Muhoozi councillors from NUP whom he had rallied and mobilized at NUP offices in Masaka to defect from their party and join PLU saying it is the one with the right vision for this country
Sarah Kiyimba the Rakai RDC commended the General for going to different places sharing knowledge on how to uplift the people from poverty.
The function was graced by many people including serving politicians such as Ministers , Members of Parliament , RDCs from Greater Masaka region, opposition politicians like Member of Parliament Twaha Kagabo and Njeru Municipality Member of Parliament Jimmy Lwanga who appreciated Muhoozi for showing him the light to get out of what he described as NUP fake generals who wear fake uniforms.
Other dignitaries who attended include former Inspector General of Police Kale Kayihura , religious leaders like Pastor Aloysius Bujingo , PLU CEC Members such as Toyota Nuwagira , Dr Balaam Barugahara Ateenyi, David Kabanda , Micheal Katungi, Lillian Aber among others.
