Igara County Member of Parliament Michael Mawanda who is wanted for corruption.

Police’s Criminal Investigations Department -CID has summoned Igara County MP Michael Mawanda and his Elgon County counterpart, Nyasio Mudimi Wamakuyu  for looting a whooping 164 billion shillings compensation for cooperatives which were affected during the war.

Mawanda and Wamakuyu are expected to report at CID Headquarters in Kibuli, Kampala tomorrow  June 19, 2024 in the afternoon. They were summoned through Parliament.

An investigation ordered by Speaker Anita Among on 29, August 2023 exposed massive corruption in cooperatives.

Mawanda was involved in the West Mengo Growers Cooperative Society.

The cooperative union had decided to engage JM Musisi and Co. Advocates to pursue its claim of Shs 14bn from the Ministry of Trade, Industries and Cooperatives.

However, Mawanda, who was not a shareholder in the cooperative union, guided the SACCO to engage the services of a city law firm known as M/S Justin Mungoma and Co. Advocates in pursuing its claims.y

Surprisingly, only Shs 50m reached the intended beneficiaries.

As a result, Muusa Bagala, the accountant of West Mengo Growers Cooperative Society told the Parliament committee chaired by Mwine Mpaka that upon receiving reports that Shs 2bn had been sent to the Sacco, he walked to Mawanda’s office at Parliament.

Bagala said Mawanda asked for 50 million shillings token to the Sacco leaders when they asked about the compensation and that this money was received from lawyers of M/S Justin Mungoma and Co. Advocates at KCB Bank in Kampala.

The summons come barely a month when PLU ‘s Vice Chairperson for Central Region Frank Gashumba blasted Mawanda for being a corrupt legislator with questionable character marred with illegalities and indiscipline itself because of looting the society.

This was after Mawanda had summoned Gashumba before the PLU Disciplinary Committee following the latter’s post on X decrying insecurity within Kampala City and calling for the resignation of top security commanders if they are unable to make the city free from criminals.

In response, Gashumba in his May 28th 2024 letter asked Mawanda “by the way tell us when will you appear before the CID for corruption and theft of cooperatives money meant for compensation of poor people to the tune of Ugx 164 billion shillings?”

Although Museveni started a hunt on the corrupt legislators and has since put MPs Cissy Namujju, Yusuf Mutembuli and Paul Akamba behind bars over the same, sources also say the CID ‘s eyes were awakened by the Influencer Gashumba’s extensive and conclusive letter to Mawanda.
