The Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) Executive Director Sharifah Buzeki has assured vendors in Ggaba that plans are actively underway to construct a modern, inclusive, and environmentally friendly market at the lakeside location.
Speaking during a meeting with vendors, local leaders, and a team from the World Bank, Buzeki emphasized that the current conditions at the Ggaba market must be improved urgently.
“It would take a blind person not to see that the vendors’ conditions need to be improved. If you see such a person in front of you, just know that that is an enemy of development,” Buzeki stated candidly.

She warned against any attempts to derail the project, noting that constructing workspaces is vital for a functional city and a productive population.
“If you have land for a market and you’re using it for something else, then we don’t know who you’re working for,” she added, reaffirming that the land was specifically procured for this market development.
Buzeki further confirmed that all necessary procedures, including communication with the Resident City Commissioner (RCC), had been followed to secure the land for market construction. She vowed to continue issuing eviction letters to unauthorized occupants.
Though Ggaba will primarily be a fish market due to its strategic location near Lake Victoria, KCCA plans to incorporate other product vendors in a bid to promote business diversity. This model follows the example set by the City Abattoir, where various products complement the primary offering.
“The prime target is fish, but let’s think in diversity. Fish vendors also need tomatoes and clothes, so we’re building a market that serves multiple needs,” she explained.
