The Attorney General has written a commitment letter to the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Hon Mathias Mpuuga committing to release NUP supporters that have stayed long in prisons on remand without concluding their cases.

This letter was written in accordance with the resolution of Parliament in Wednesdays debate in which Deputy Attorney General Jackson Kafuuzi promised to get in touch with the Director of Public Prosecution, Chief Justice, Principal Judge and Deputy Chief Justice to ensure that these people are released on bail or acquited if there is no evidence.

“This morning, I received a letter from the Attorney General particularly in regard to Parliament resolution on the trial of civilians in the Court Martial, and those in detention without trial” Mpuuga posted on his Twitter.

Mpuuga added that “the Attorney General made a commitment that he’s going to work with the other Justice Law and Order Sector (JLOS) to handle the matter in line with the resolution of the House to the effect that those who have been in detention without trial be either bailed or freed because the state has failed to prosecute them” Mpuuga stated.

Several NUP supporters have been detained in various jails with some being charged in Court martial but with Little progress in prosecuting them!
