Kampala – Tragedy struck in the early hours of Saturday morning as Rajiv Ruparelia, the only son of prominent businessman Sudhir Ruparelia, died in a fatal car accident at the Busabala flyover.

According to Deputy Police Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire, the crash occurred at approximately 1:54 AM on May 3, 2025.

“A white Nissan GTR (registration number UAT 638L) lost control, overturned and burst into flames at the Busabala flyover. The driver, identified as 35-year-old Rajiv Ruparelia, died instantly at the scene,” Owoyesigyire stated. “Investigations into the cause of the accident are currently underway.”

Rajiv was a key figure in the Ruparelia Group, serving as one of its managing directors and overseeing various enterprises within his father’s business empire. He was widely regarded as a dynamic and energetic force behind the group’s expansion in recent years.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, several road users have voiced concern about the safety of the Busabala flyover, with some blaming the road contractor for negligence.

“Busabala tunnel is a death trap. Just three days ago, I nearly crashed into a barrier. The contractor placed them in areas with no lighting, making them nearly invisible at night,” said one commuter.

Calls for an immediate audit of road safety standards and contractor accountability have grown louder as the nation mourns the loss of one of Uganda’s most promising young entrepreneurs.
