The selling of meat in Kampala has been banned with immediate effect following the outbreak of foot and mouth disease in the city.
The directive has been issued by the Commissioner Animal Health in the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries Dr Anna Rose Ademun in a letter dated 7th March 2024 addressed to the Executive Director Kampala Capital City Authority.
“Following an outbreak of foot and mouth disease in Kabowa – Lubaga Division Kampala, as reported on 28th Feb 2024, quarantine restrictions are hereby imposed” the letter reads in part.
Movement of cattle, goats, sheep, pigs and their products and their by-products from, to, through and within Kampala District is prohibited until further notice. Livestock markets, slaughter places including butcheries, loading grounds and animal shows are here by closed until further notice” the document reads.
