Hellen Seku, Commissioner of the National Secretariat for Patriotism Corps, has urged the government to provide support to trained patriotic youths, who remain unemployed despite possessing valuable skills. Seku made the remarks today, Saturday, at Nkumba University, where 750 student leaders from 83 higher  institutions of learning across Uganda concluded a two-week patriotism training program.

According to Seku, the National Secretariat for Patriotism Corps has trained 146,791 citizens across the country, exceeding its target of 75,000 citizens per year. However, many of these trained youths remain unemployed, prompting Seku to propose the creation of patriots’ savings and credit cooperatives (SACCOs) to support them.

Throughout the training, Seku indicated that the participants engaged with experienced instructors from government, academia, and the private sector, covering critical topics such as Foundations of Patriotism Ideology, Political Economy and Laws of Social Development, Social Systems, Patriotic Discipline and Methods of Work, and Financial Literacy. As Seku highlighted, this training program aimed to instill core values of patriotism, encourage a mindset shift, and empower participants to drive change within their communities and institutions. The National Secretariat for Patriotism Corps Office of the President pledged to continue working tirelessly to inspire a generation of patriotic Ugandans. She asked the students to also take Patriotism as a religion and preach it always.

“To the participants, as you leave this place today, know that patriotism is like region, we have to preach, live and practice it every day and everywhere we go because on a daily basis we have those who backslide, those who get saved, those who re-confess, who forget and pagens hence we have to walk, and talk patriotism, be our foot soldiers, disciples and ambassadors of change and not destruction”, said Seku.

Seku expressed gratitude to President Museveni and First Lady Janet Museveni, whom she referred to as “Maama,” for their unwavering support to the education sector and patriotism initiatives

In her closing remarks, Seku urged the participants to become ambassadors of change, preaching, living, and practicing patriotism daily.
