Deputy Speaker visits Kigali Genocide Memorial

The Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon Thomas Tayebwa, today visited and paid his respects at the Kigali Genocide Memorial.

The Rwanda genocide remains one of darkest moments in Rwanda’s history where over one million people gruesomely lost their lives.

“I paid my sincerest respects and laid a wreath on the mass grave where over 250,000 innocent souls, claimed by the genocide are resting,” wrote Tayebwa on his personal X social media platform.

He noted that the visual images and harrowing tales of the unspeakable crimes against humanity evoke ‘an overwhelming sadness that even the strongest among us struggle to contain’.

On behalf of Parliament, Tayebwa extended condolences to the families of the victims in particular and people of Rwanda in general.

“Your unwavering commitment to peace and reconciliation has been nothing short of admirable, allowing you to rebuild your beautiful country in the face of unimaginable tragedy. Today, I offer my prayers, fervently hoping that such horrific acts of ethnic cleansing will never plague any corner of our world again,” said Tayebwa.

Tayebwa is in Kigali with several Members of Parliament (MPs) participating in the ongoing East African Community Inter-Parliamentary Games which ends on Tuesday.
