The recent mega rally by the Patriotic League of Uganda in Masaka has marked a new beginning in the politics of Uganda as it left serious wounds in the heart and political base of the NUP! Given the ongoing sharp disagreements and crisis within the NUP in the greater Masaka, it is obvious that PLU has hit the last nail in the NUP’s political coffin!
There is no doubt that the coming of PLU into the Political arena of Uganda is a game changer especially among the young people. With over 20 NUP councilors in Masaka joining PLU, and with several legislators within the NUP endorsing PLU, there is no doubt that the opposition support is dwindling courtesy of Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
For starters, politics is about perception. It’s about how you brand yourself and the picture you portray for the world to think of you.
In the run up to 2021 elections, there was a lack of hope within opposition. This was after Dr Besigye running a campaign demoralizing Ugandans on elections saying that they can’t not remove Museveni from power. It was also after FDC had been divided into two factions resulting into the formation of ANT. It was also after Museveni had amended the constitution to remove the age limit from the Constitution.
So in the wake of this loss of hope in the citizenry, Bobi Wine projected himself as the hope for the people. Through the People Power Movement he rallied the opposition supporters and leaders together, gave them hope and courage to fight on despite the prevailing bottlenecks! Therefore Bobi Wine created that perception in the minds of the people that he would deliver change to the country!
A few years down the road, Bobi Wine failed to demonstrate that he would deliver the change he promised. When his election was allegedly stolen, he went to the Supreme Court but withdrew the case. He failed to mobilize Ugandans to demonstrate or cause regime change.
So Ugandans realised that Bobi Wine and NUP were just a scam, they have no magic to cause change. What made matters worse was that Bobi Wine concentrated on his film industry where he has won some awards and billions of money. Him and family have traveled allover the world enjoying a lavish lifestyle at the expense of the poor foot soldiers. This also made people to shun Bobi Wine as another selfish fella riding on their backs for his personal ambition!
The ongoing fights and intrigue within the Party have also exposed Bobi Wine as a weakling and a mediocre leader.
So PLU and Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba have projected themselves as the only hope for the country. Gen MK has been accepted even by the opposition as the next President of Uganda because he has successfully created that perception within the population. As Bobi Wine is in America getting money from the homosexuals, Gen MK and PLU are mobilizing Ugandans to fight poverty among themselves.
The most interesting thing is that PLU has captured Buganda which was the base of the NUP. Any political organization should have a base just like UPC has Lango or how DP had Buganda as a base. So any political party should fight hard to maintain it’s base as it expands its territory. Therefore, now that Gen MK and PLU have captured the base of the NUP, it means that its future has been destroyed!
