MP Francis Mwijukye injured as goons attack Buhweju Church.

The Christians from Rwanyamabare Catholic Church, Butare Parish in Mbarara Archdiocese were shocked today after a group of panga and machete wielding goons attacked them after prayers and injured a number of them including Hon Mwijukye Francis who is the area MP.

The incident happened in Buhweju District on Sunday when a group of assailants attacked the Christians after the church service and hit the Christians with pangas and machetes which injured Hon Mwijukye in the head and other people.

It is said that the land where the church is located is being contested by a lawyer called Edwin Burimbare who has vowed to evict the Church and it’s neighborhood which includes a school. It is alleged that the suspected attackers were hired by him to attack the Christians.

The LCV Chairman for Buhweju District Deo Atuhaire condemned the incident.

“Hon Mwijukye Francis mp waitu Buziima has been attacked by a group of land grabbers today in Bubweju, Rwanyamabare catholic church and was hit and injured. Police evacuated him and is now admitted and is receiving treatment” Deo said in a statement posted to the media. Deo also urged the people of Buhweju to remain calm as the police continued to hunt the culprits.

The RDC of Buhweju and also the Chairman District Security Committee condemned the incident and said that he had ordered Police to arrest the said goons.

“No one will demolish our church l have ordered DPC to arrest these hooligans” said Nicholas the RDC Buhweju District.

Meanwhile Hon Francis Mwijukye is receiving treatment. Efforts by our reporter to reach the said Edwin for a comment were futile by the time this story was filed.
