The Kinkizi West MP James Kaberuka Ruugi has advocated for teachers empowerment and support because of the great work they are doing in Kanungu District and the country at large. Hon. Kaberuka emphasized this on 30th Dec 2024 during the belated Teacher’s Day celebrations at Rovens World, Kihiihi where he was the Chief Guest.
Addressing teachers, leaders, and stakeholders, Kaberuka praised educators as “visionaries shaping the nation’s future” and called for improved welfare, equitable pay, and active inclusion in national policymaking. He criticized disparities in teacher remuneration and urged society to prioritize their empowerment, describing teaching as a calling rather than a profession.

Kaberuka who is a teacher and proprietor Kihiihi Community School criticized government on the policy of paying Science teachers a different salary scale as compared to their Arts counterparts which he said is a unfair policy, “how can we reward a secondary school Mathematics teacher as a scientist while neglecting a primary school teacher who lays a foundation for Mathematical skills?” Kaberuka wondered, adding that these issues need to be addressed.
Kaberuka advised teachers to take advantage of technology by doing research so that they remain up-to-date saying that with the information age even learners can access information. He also asked the teachers to act as parents since they spend more time with the learners than the parents.
The event, held under the theme “Valuing Teachers’ Voices Towards a New Social Contract,” also featured UNATU Secretary General Phillibert Baguma, who rallied teachers to remain united in pursuing their interests.

Teachers’ Day is celebrated every 5th of October but Kanungu District function was held on 30th Dec 2024. The ceremony ended with a renewed pledge to support educators and elevate their voices in national development.
