MPs ask government to hasten regulations for Sports Act

Legislators call on the Ministry of Education and Sports to expedite regulations under the National Sports Act for effective management of sports federations. The MPs respond to Minister Peter Ogwang’s statement on alleged mismanagement in the Uganda Netball Federation, citing the cancellation of its recognition by the National Council of Sports (NCS).

Ogwang reveals reasons for the UNF certificate withdrawal, including governance challenges and undisclosed bank accounts. World Netball suspends the UNF executive committee pending fair elections, triggered by the arrest of former president Sarah Babirye Kityo over mismanagement allegations.

MPs, including Hon. Sarah Opendi, emphasize the need for swift regulations to enhance sports governance. Hon. Samuel Acuti advocates for conflict resolution measures, proposing an independent committee if a sports administration court is not feasible.

Hon. Geofrey Macho urges the Minister for Sports to use the new sports law to address issues in the Uganda Netball Federation. Ogwang announces the Ministry’s committee working with the Attorney General to finalize regulations, promising to present them to Parliament in two months.

Ogwang seeks Speaker’s approval to present a report on investigations into the UNF’s affairs and fund mismanagement. He updates on the legal actions against the former netball federation president, currently in police custody and facing charges in the anti-corruption court.
