Legislators are urging the government to address the severe road traffic issues in the Kampala Metropolitan Area, emphasizing its adverse impact on the movement of goods and services. Hon. Dicksons Kateshumbwa raised concerns about ongoing road works hindering traffic flow from areas outside Kampala toward the central business district (CBD). Highlighting the economic significance of Kampala, Kateshumbwa stressed the need for infrastructure development that ensures a continuous flow of traffic. He called on the Prime Minister to outline measures to maintain seamless traffic.

These concerns were echoed by Speaker Anita Among, who, during a plenary sitting, commented on the state of roads in Kampala. Among attributed road disruptions to heavy rains caused by climate change, resulting in floods and observed littering on city roads. She emphasized the importance of responsible actions for creating a smart city and awaited a report from the Physical Infrastructure Committee on flooding and building in trenches.

In response to the challenges of traffic jams due to road works, Hon. Nathan Byanyima proposed the creation of an inter-ministerial committee involving key ministries and agencies, such as Works and Transport, UNRA, and KCCA. He urged collaborative efforts to improve the overall condition of Kampala.

Hon. Siraji Ezama emphasized the need for the Ministry of Works to prioritize main roads in Mukono and Wakiso districts, integral to the traffic flow in and out of Kampala city. The Third Deputy Prime Minister, Rukia Nakadama, assured the House that alternative routes within the city have been provided to support the continuity of traffic, urging members to be patient with the ongoing efforts.
