A section of Opposition Members of Parliament (MPs) have tasked Government to expeditiously rescue Ugandans who were allegedly captured in Myanmar.
MPs fear that the captives might be forced into rebel activities if not rescued!
“I have received credible information and numerous correspondences and victims that suggest that hundreds of Ugandan nationals by my counting estimated at 450 Ugandans are being held as hostages in Myanmar by alleged rebel groups. Most of these victims had travelled for work. We don’t know who took them whether it was Government or private groups,” asserted Muwada Nkunyingi the MP for Kyadondo East Constituency.
Muwada was speaking at a press briefing held at Parliament where he blamed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for failing to issue travel advisory to Ugandans which has led many to fall victims in various countries.
“We demand that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs urgently and unconditionally initiates diplomatic measures of rescuing the Ugandans currently being held by rebel groups in Myanmar.” asked Muwadda.
The MP further asked Government to address the complaints of detention and persecution of Ugandans trapped in the Middle East, noting that despite the numerous reports of inhumane treatment, sexual violence raised by Ugandans working abroad, there is no clear mechanism put in place to respond or avert these concerns.
“We can’t celebrate that Uganda host so many international summits, built a beautiful hotel when Ugandans who must benefit squarely from the foreign relations are suffering from foreign countries,” said Muwadda.
Hon Kayemba Ssolo, the MP for Bukomansimbi South Constituency said that it is sad that many Ugandans are being detained in foreign countries and are not helped by their country.
“unfortunately, the country where they have hope and think will take care of them, the country also lost hope in them. That is why I tell Ugandans to be vigilant in the countries you are going to and be vigilant about the person that is taking you, because this country that you think will take care of you after getting into trouble is a loss.” Said Kayemba.
