The National Animal Genetic Resources Centre and Data Bank (NAGRC&DB) is seeking for additional Shs5Bn for the establishment of a pig genetic resource centre in the 2024/25, in order to boost pig production in Uganda.

However a report from Parliament’s Agriculture Committee observed that Shs 10Bn was budgeted for the establishment of the pig breeding centre in 2024/25, but only Shs 5Bn was provided for, yet there is need to avail improved pig genetic resources. The centre will also be used to train pig farmers across the country, thus the need to avail the balance of Shs5Bn to the centre.

“This is a key activity, if you are aware, Uganda was placed number two on the consumption of these animals, but only in Africa. But only Shs 5Bn was provided yet there is need to improve pig genetic resources and this centre can also provide training for pig farmers country wide,” said Janet Okori-Moe, Chairperson Agriculture Committee.

The Budget Committee is interfacing with various committees to discuss budgets from various Ministries. The Budget Committee Report will be presented before the house for debate
