The Commissioner of National Secretariat for Patriotism Corps (NSPC) Hellen Seku has praised Joshua Cheptegei, Uganda’s athletics world record champion in 5000m and 10000m for his patriotism and dedication to raising the Ugandan flag globally.
Seku acknowledged Cheptegei’s remarkable achievements, noting that they have brought pride and recognition to Uganda.
Her commendations came during her presidential zonal tours in the Sebei region, a trip aimed at evaluating the performance and implementation of wealth creation initiatives in the area. The tours are also part of the president’s broader efforts to assess and bolster economic growth and community development across different regions.

In a memorable moment, Seku, together with the Minister for Finance in charge of Investment and Privatization Evelyn Anite, had the rare opportunity to stand side-by-side at the starting line with Cheptegei at the Kiprotich High Altitude Training Centre located in Kapchorwa district.
Seku lauded Cheptegei for consistently elevating Uganda’s global profile through his exceptional athletic talents.
She was also impressed by the athlete’s resilience even when they used not to have better training facilities, most used to do their training from Kenya but kudos to the government’s commitment to sports development and its athletes.
Her visiting the home of champions highlighted the importance of patriotism promotion, teamwork, and supporting the efforts and contributions made by different patriots in a way of inspiring national pride and unity among Ugandans.

She further commended the world champion for his constantly empowering the youth of Sebei region through organizing annual runs that are not only intended to groom them into outstanding athletes like the world record holder himself but also use it as an empowerment platform.
For example, this run focused on youth empowerment with a mission to combat sexual and gender based violence, including female Genital Mutilation(FMG) while promoting talent identification and sports tourism in the sub- region.

Sebei sub region, the home of champions as it is popularly known, is privileged by God as the community is endowed and gifted by nature irrespective of sex, young souls are gifted with natural stamina and gusto with the aim of producing more and more champions.
