Kampala, 26th April 2025
The Speaker of the Parliament of Uganda, Annet Anita Among, and her Deputy, Thomas Tayebwa, were among the dignitaries who attended the funeral of the late Pope Francis at St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City.
They were accompanied by the State Minister for Finance, Henry Musaazi, Soroti City MP Ariko Edmond Herbert, and other Ugandan officials.
The Ugandan delegation joined world leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump, former U.S. President Joe Biden, and Kenya’s President William Ruto, in paying their final respects to the late Pontiff.
During the event, Speaker Among was seen sharing light moments with former President Joe Biden, whose administration had previously imposed sanctions on her following the passing of Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Law in 2023.
Speaker Among and Deputy Speaker Tayebwa, who had previously had private audiences with Pope Francis, testified that the Pope’s blessings had a profound spiritual impact on their lives — a reason they cited for making the journey to attend his final send-off.
