The recent declaration by Speaker of Parliament, Annet Anita Among, to spearhead the enactment of a law against counterfeit products in Uganda is a commendable move. This initiative marks a significant step towards economic transformation and the protection of Ugandan consumers from substandard goods.

Speaker Among made this pledge while inaugurating the Anti-Counterfeit Expo at Parliament—a symbolic venue that underscores the gravity of the issue and her commitment to combat the scourge of counterfeit products. By hosting this event in Parliament, she has signaled her dedication to eradicating counterfeits and reinforcing quality standards across the Ugandan market.

The proliferation of counterfeit products in Uganda is a serious, yet often overlooked, threat to our nation’s well-being. Consider the plight of farmers who have lost livestock due to ineffective acaricides, products that fail to protect against ticks. Counterfeit products affect various sectors, from machinery and equipment to consumables and spare parts, undermining consumer confidence and endangering lives.

The consequences of these products are dire. They pose health risks, cost Ugandans billions of shillings, and stymie economic growth. Speaker Among’s commitment to pushing forward legislation to address this issue demonstrates her leadership in tackling these widespread and deep-rooted challenges. Her proactive stance reminds us of the critical need for strong laws to protect citizens and ensure quality products in the marketplace.

Without robust legislation, Uganda remains vulnerable to becoming a dumping ground for substandard products, jeopardizing both the health of our people and the credibility of our markets. Counterfeit goods not only endanger lives but also impact the economy by evading tax assessments, offering consumers no value for their money, and creating unfair competition for genuine manufacturers. Furthermore, if Uganda continues to harbor counterfeit products, it will tarnish our reputation within the East African Community, COMESA, and other global markets.

The absence of a legal framework to combat counterfeit products leaves Ugandans unprotected. This law, when enacted, will hold traders and manufacturers accountable, compelling them to ensure quality standards and providing recourse for consumers who fall victim to counterfeit goods. In this way, the Speaker’s initiative promises to bring accountability and responsibility to the forefront, creating a safer and fairer market for all.

Speaker Among’s call to action is both timely and strategic. As Ugandans, we must rally behind her efforts, as we are all affected by the proliferation of counterfeit goods. Supporting her campaign is not only about securing better products but also about safeguarding our health, our economy, and our nation’s future.

Together, let us stand with Speaker Among to make Uganda counterfeit-free and forge a path towards a safer, more prosperous country.
