Deputy Speaker of Parliament Rt Hon Thomas Tayebwa has underscored the need to update national legislation on data protection and privacy in a bid to counter potential threats posed by technological advancements.
Tayebwa said this while speaking as Chief Guest at the 2024 Data Privacy Day Conference.
Tayebwa also emphasised the need to modify the Data Protection and Privacy Act to provide for Artificial Intelligence (AI). He urged the Personal Data Protection Office to analyse the existing law and make proposals to the Minister for ICT, for amendment.
Tayebwa commended the Personal Data Protection Office for its registered achievements since the enactment of the law in 2019, and urged the ICT Minister, Hon. Chris Baryomunsi, to lobby for more funding to the office through Parliamentary appropriation.
