Uganda Prisons need 79 billion for feeding!

The Committee on Defence and Internal Affairs has indicated that Uganda Prisons Service requires Shs79.973 billion to cater for outstanding arrears for prisoners’ feeding accrued in financial year 2023/2024.

Committee Chairperson Hon. Wilson Kajwengye said this while presenting a report on the Budget Framework Paper for financial year 2024/2025.

Funding of Shs2 billion is needed to survey 5 pieces of land belonging to Uganda Prisons at Kigandalo, Bulaula, Isingiro, Luwero & Mpigi.

Prisons also requires Shs18 billion to construct a mini-max prison in Mbarara, to check on the congestion at prison facilities across the country.

It has an approved capacity of 20,996, implying 56,320 prisoners are in excess of the approved capacity, an occupancy rate of 368.2%.
