The Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) have recaptured the Buulo Mareer military base and secured the surrounding areas from the enemy al_ Shabab terrorist who captured it a week ago.
In a combined force of UPDF armed infantry and motorized units, Buulo Mareer base and town has once again fallen in UPDF control.
This followed serous fighting in which Al _Shabab snippers who were fighting from building were whipped out in resistance.
According to Brig Gen Peter Gaetano Omala sector one commander over seeing the operation at Golomeyn tactical base,bombs planted in roads by the enemy force have been bursted making roads safe for public use.
However the night curfew announced by the UPDF , sister forces and the Somali government still remains until all Al Shabab elements are rooted out and then force neutralized.
“We have combed the area to ensure no Al Shabab element is hiding and road has been cleared of bombs people can now go on with their business” he declared.
He said, ” As UPDF serving under African Union Transition Mission in Somalia we remain committed to supporting a Somali led peace and stability process as mandated by African Union ”
This follows a sudden ambush on the 26th May, 2023 in which Al Shabab fighters using three vehicles ladened with bombs and over 800 fighters overran Buulo Mareer forward operating base over powering the UPDF with many fatalities and also looted some fighting equipments.
However the UPDF later said the Al Shabab were followed and the equipments destroyed before settling to recapture the base.
President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda and commander in chief of all armed forces have since then directed the formation of an inquiry to find out details surrounding the Buulo Mareer base
