The country has been thrown into shock after learning that 60,000 offices in various government departments are vacant after the government failed to recruit workers yet the same government is paying 53 billion to ghost workers.
This was contained in the Auditor General Report for the financial year 2022/23 that was recently handed over to the Speaker of Parliament last week. The Auditor General Report came after a verification exercise in which various government Ministries, agencies & departments’ employees were verified to see the genuine ones.
Reports indicate that several names are enrolled on payroll while they don’t exist in the offices to do work. Some are said to be officers who died, retired, resigned or absconded but continue to earn money for no work done and in turn 53 billion is spent annually.
On the other hand, several government agencies especially in health, education etc continue to grapple with understaffing as government claims to lack money to recruit staff. Now Ugandans continue to ask why government can’t fix these ghost workers.
“The same government that is paying 53 billion to ghost workers according to the Auditor General Report is unable to recruit 60,000 staff in various government departments! Unless we address the wastage of resources, Ugandans will keep suffering” said Nyakato Asinansi, the Hoima City MP
