Attorney General to Court: NUP Missing Persons Fictitious

The government through the Attorney General has told the High Court in Kampala  that the 18 missing NUP supporters are fictitious/non-existent and that their disappearance was never reported to police or any other authorities.

According to the Attorney General the allegations made by the families of the alleged missing persons are based on hearsay and that there is no evidence of their arrest and detention in any government prisons.

In her defense contained in four affidavits of  investigators including Rashidah Naluzze  Detective Superintendent of Police the CID attached to  Katwe Police Division,  Sylvia Kasoga a Detective Superintendent of Police attached to Kampala Metropolitan Police Headquarters, Joel Ntabu Detective SP attached to Kampala Central Police Station and Paul Ajjala Mukungu a Major in UPDF and Legal Officer attached to JAT and Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence some of the alleged missing persons were never reported anywhere by their relatives as missing persons.

Police further states that some of the alleged missing persons were fictitious people because one relative reported the missing of Joseph Ssemuju but investigations revealed that there was no such a person in their custody. And afterwards, the relative said the person is called Joseph Baguma whom police say he was never reported as a missing person.

According to the Police investigators some alleged missing persons had different names making it hard to look for them. However, the attorney general indicated the investigations are still on.

Today when the matter came up before Justice Esta Nambayo , State Attorney Jackie Amusugut told Court that they have filed their defense in the case and it is contained in  four affidavits and they needed time to file the fifth affidavit.

As a result, the Judge gave the parties 24th April 2024 to conclude their responses.

In January 2024 year relatives of the 18 missing supporters dragged the Attorney General to High Court demanding for their release and compensation for a breach of their constitutional rights.

The relatives of the missing persons turned emotional at court saying they are helpless ever since they people went missing
