The Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning has told Parliament that support from donors is expected to reduce significantly in the 2024/25 Financial Year.
Documents from the Ministry submitted to Parliament’s Budget Committee have revealed that the support will drop from Sh2.781tn in 2023/24 to Sh28.94b in 2024/25.
Yesterday, the Health Minister, Jane Ruth Aceng warned that donor funding to the health sector is expected to drop by 49%! She however declined to attribute the drop to the passing of the Anti-Homosexuality Act last year.
According to the Ministry of Finance, the Government expects donor support amounting to Sh857.876b in the 2024/25 Financial Year, which will then increase to Sh1.085tn in 2025/26 and then drop to just Sh440.430b in 2026/27 Financial Years respectively.
“I know many people think it is the Anti-Homosexuality Act but it isn’t. Donor funding has been going down and I have been presenting this because the donors can’t support us forever. Actually, recently, we were disturbed when PEPFAR announced they were withdrawing, there was a serious discussion in their cabinet, withdrawing all of a sudden. So the issue here is, we need to be planning as the donors continue to reduce, and they are reducing. And I have already indicated to you that all the money for public health comes from donors, so it is a critical issue,” asserted Aceng.
